The Team

Marty Le Roy

3rd base Director
Chief Executive Officer

3rd base is the culmination of a dream by its founder, Marty Le Roy, nearly 2 years ago inspired by the words of Mahatma Ghandi, ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world’. This dream was based on a passion for sport, coaching and children and bringing them all together in a programme based on excellence at all levels of participation. Our vision, ‘kaha tangata, kaha toa, kaha iwi’ – ‘strong person, strong athlete, strong communities’ is the founding statement of our organisation and the core of our being, using sport as our waka to make a positive impact on individuals and their communities.Marty spent 12 years in the NZ Police with 4 years of that involved in Youth Aid. He has played and competed at provincial and national levels in several sports and is currently Player/ Head Coach with a premier softball club in the Auckland fastpitch competition. Marty has also been involved in coaching netball in the past 5 years.Marty is responsible for the overall daily operations of 3rd base, in particular the development and delivery of the programmes and marketing.

Tanya McCarthy

Tanya brings a wealth of knowledge to 3rd base through her passion and personal experience with playing, coaching and umpiring netball.

Tanya’s involvement with netball began through coaching her daughters at primary school level and has continued with her now being a well respected Waitakere Netball umpire with Regional Badge qualifications.  Tanya has recently completed her full New Zealand Umpires Badge.

Tanya’s true passion lies with her ‘coaching the coaches’ programmes and it is this grass routes approach of preparing new coaches and coaches with limited experience for their roles that inspires her.   Tanya prides herself in the knowledge that thorough her coaching and input with other coaches young players are able to aspire to their potential at college, provincial and national levels.

Tanya is passionate about all sports and has been involved in coordinating and managing many sporting events within the educational environment.

Tanya is at presently working towards a Bachelor of Sports and brings her enthusiasm and expertise to instill, coach and guide all participants within the sporting environment to 3rd base

Mike Pipi

Mike brings to 3rd base a life time of ball play with over 30 years involvement in the game of softball. Mikes passion for the game and the benefits that it can bring for the player, team and supporters is why he has remained involved for so long. It is this passion that makes Mike an integral part of the 3rd base team.

Mike has played for several Auckland and North Harbour clubs over the years and has played at many representative levels for both associations. Mike also played for Tuson Raiders in Prescott Arizona.

Mikes was ‘originally’ a 1st baseman, but now specialises in catching and is currently player/coach for a club team in the North Harbour competition. Mike is heavily involved in coaching and is at present coaching club softball at junior level and has also recently been involved in coaching representative softball at the 2009 under 17 boys Nationals.

Mike is responsible for the implementation and delivery of the 3rd base softball programme and brings his years of experience from the game and as a dad to our organisation.

“Softball has been very good to me making many friends through out NZ and now Australia having recently returned from my third Pan Pac Masters where 97 teams entered and 580 games were played in seven days. The camaraderie is nothing but the best and I’m very proud to come home with a Gold, Bronze and Silver medals.”

Nathan Thorp

Nathan or ‘Nate’ as he likes to be known is a current Premier player in the Auckland Fast Pitch Competition. A specialist Catcher, Nate has been playing softball for the past 11 years and at the age of 20 has an impressive CV of representative age group accomplishments including 2 National titles.

Voted the ‘Best and Fairest’ in the AFC in 2007-2008 was a highlight of Nate’s career to date and it is these same qualities as an athlete and person that make Nate an integral part of our team, bringing insight and perspective to our organisation from the ‘up and coming’ players viewpoint.

Nate’s calm demeanor and ability to instill confidence into young athletes is a very special quality and we at 3rd base are privileged to have him as part of our team.
